Again into the light   다시, 빛으로

“Creating a just world is the mission of the Catholic Church. It is the way to establish the kingdom of God on this earth. A world where there are no people above people, a world where everyone lives as human beings! It is the world that God wants…” Those are the words of Bishop Daniel Ji Hak-soon, who did his best to be the light and salt of the world.

“Again into the light!” This is the theme of a special event that is being held in Wonju in September to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late bishop who was born in Chunghwa County, North Hwanghae Province, in 1921 and passed away on March 12, 1993.

He was ordained a priest on Dec. 15, 1952, and was consecrated as the first diocesan bishop of the diocese of Wonju in 1965. “Fiat Lux” (Let there be light) was his pastoral slogan throughout his life.

“Again into the light,” a meaningful project to be the light and salt of the world again, aims to remember and carry on the spirit of Ji Hak-soon, who devoted himself to laying the foundation for education, welfare, and culture, while paying attention to areas of the region that needed help.

Including the Corporation of Daniel Ji Hak-soon, 28 organizations such as the Gangwon Newspaper, the Catholic Church of Wonju Lay Apostolic Council, Juspeace, Bright Credit Union, Wonju Cultural Center, and Sangji University jointly prepared this event. For three days from Sept. 14, an academic conference is being held at Sangji University with the theme of “Memory: the Life and Activities of Bishop Ji Hak-soon.”

Various events, including exhibitions of photos and relics of the bishop, art works and performances by the “Modugol” clown group are set to take place. A busking performance, academic conference and a procession in honor of the bishop are also scheduled among other events.

Inheriting the spirit of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the bishop devoted his life to realizing a church that strives for the welfare, peace, and salvation of mankind through reconciliation and renewal. To help people become self-reliant through education, he established the Jinkwang Private School and Catholic Center. In 1969, the Jinkwang Cooperative Educational Institute was established within the school to promote the credit union movement. The credit union offered financial aid to poor students, parents and teachers, and taught students the necessity of financial activities and savings.

In addition, Wonju Catholic Hospital was established to provide welfare and a medical infrastructure, and the Wonju Catholic Social Welfare Society and Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Service were also established. The first credit cooperative was planned to construct a society promoting mutual aid among farmers and economic independence for local residents.

In the 1970s, Ji Hak-soon took the lead in pro-democracy movements such as the Realization of Social Justice and Contest against Corruption, and the Declaration of Conscience.

“You are the salt of the Earth… You are the light of the world… Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds …”(Matthew 5:13-16). 

다시, 빛으로

“정의로운 세상을 만드는 것은 가톨릭 교회의 사명입니다. 그것은 이 땅에 하느님 나라를 이루는 길입니다. 사람 위에 사람 없는 세상, 모든 이가 사람답게 사는 세상! 이것이 바로 하느님께서 바라시는 세상입니다….” 세상의 빛과 소금이 되기 위해 최선을 다하신 지학순 다니엘 주교님의 말씀이다.

“다시, 빛으로!”는 1921년 평안남도(지금은 황해북도) 중화군에서 태어나 1993년 3월 12일 선종하신 지학순 주교님의 탄생 100주년을 기념하기 위해 9월 한 달 동안 원주에서 열리는 특별한 행사의 주제다.

지학순 주교님은 1952년 12월 15일 사제품을 받았고, 1965년 원주교구 초대교구장으로 임명되었다. “빛이 되어라(Fiat Lux)”는 지학순 주교님이 평생에 걸쳐 실천한 사목 표어(슬로건)였다.

“다시, 빛으로”는 세상의 빛과 소금이 되고자 하는 뜻 깊은 프로젝트로, 도움이 필요한 지역에 주의를 기울이며 교육, 복지, 문화의 기반을 마련하기 위해 투신하신 지학순 주교님의 정신을 기억하여 이어가기 위한 것이다.

이번 행사는 사단법인 지학순 다니엘을 비롯해 강원일보, 천주교 원주교구 평신도사도직협의회, 저스피스, 밝음신협, 원주문화원, 상지대 등 28개 단체가 공동으로 준비했다. 9월 14일부터 사흘 동안은 “기억: 지학순 주교의 삶과 활동”이라는 주제의 학술대회가 상지대에서 열린다.

지학순 주교님의 사진과 유물 전시, 미술전, 광대패 ‘모두골’의 공연 등 다채로운 행사가 펼쳐지고 있다. 여러 행사 가운데 버스킹 공연, 학술대회, 지학순 주교님을 기리는 행진이 마련되어 있다.

지학순 주교님은 제2차 바티칸공의회(1962-1965) 정신을 이어받아 화해와 쇄신을 통해 인류의 복지와 평화, 구원을 위해 노력하는 교회를 실현하고자 헌신했고, 교육을 통해 자립할 수 있도록 진광학원과 가톨릭 센터를 설립했다. 1969년에는 신용협동조합 운동을 펼치기 위해 학원 안에 진광협동교육연구소를 설치했다. 신용협동조합은 가난한 학생과 학부모, 교사들을 재정적으로 지원했으며 학생들에게 금융활동과 저축의 필요성을 가르쳤다.

또한 복지와 의료 기반을 마련하기 위해 원주가톨릭병원을 세웠고, 원주가톨릭사회복지회와 프란치스코 전교봉사수녀회도 설립했으며, 농민들의 상생과 지역 주민들의 경제적 자립을 도모하는 사회를 이루기 위해 최초로 신용협동조합을 이루었다.

1970년대에 지학순 주교님은 사회정의 구현과 부정부패 규탄 대회, 양심선언 등 민주화 운동에 앞장섰다.

“너희는 세상의 소금이다. … 너희는 세상의 빛이다. … 너희의 빛이 사람들 앞을 비추어, 그들이 너희의 착한 행실을 보게 하라….”(마태 5,13-16)
