사랑을 노래한 대중가요 가운데 “사랑, 사랑, 누가 말했나, 향기로운 꽃보다 진하다고?"라는 가사가 있다. 사랑은 우리 삶에 깊고 그윽한 향기를 퍼트리며 순간순간을 다채로운 색깔로 물들인다. 사랑은 비가 개인 다음 드높은 하늘에 떠오르는 무지개보다 훨씬 크다.

사랑은 알파와 오메가, 곧 시작과 끝이요, 원인과 결과이며 이유와 정답이다. 사랑은 우리가 "한마음 한 뜻"(사도행전 4,32)으로 조화롭게 살아가게 하는 내적 힘이다. 사랑은 공동체를 이루어 따뜻한 형제애로 서로를 지탱해 주는 근본 원리다.

우리 삶은 사랑으로 가득 차 있다. 참으로 사랑은 모든 것이다. 사랑에서 겸손과 너그러움, 나눔과 연민, 인내와 용서, 온유함, 기꺼이 섬김 등 여러 가지 덕목이 움튼다. 성경 전반의 요점도 사랑이다. 성경 말씀은 하느님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 것을 최고의 가치로 여긴다.

수많은 대중가요와 시, 소설과 예술, 그림과 조각이 사랑 이야기를 담아 표현한다. 사랑은 그처럼 좋은 것이다.

"사랑으로 진리를 전하십시요!" 이 말씀은 그리스도 안에서 새롭게 된 바오로딸 사명의 슬로건이다. 특히 회심한 이들이 걸어온 삶의 이야기를 읽으면 회심의 출발점은 무엇보다 하느님의 무조건적 사랑을 깨닫는 데서 비롯됨을 분명히 알 수 있다. 참으로 영적 사랑에 대한 인식에서 새로운 삶이 시작된다.

바오로 가족 수도회 창립자 야고보 알베리오네 신부(1884-1971)의 일기를 처음 대했을 때 나는 새롭게 시작하려는 알베리오네의 몸부림에 깊이 감동하여 번역하기 시작했다.

알베리오네는 여섯 살 때 사제가 되고 싶어 열두 살에 토리노에 있는 브라 신학교에 들어갔지만, 어떤 이유에서인지 4년 동안의 신학교 생활을 마치고 집으로 돌아가야만 했다. 사실 알베리오네는 신학교에 있으면서 한밤중에도 책을 많이 읽어 영적 삶의 균형을 잃었다. 그래서 사제가 되기 위한 공부를 그만두어야 했다. 신학교 생활 중반에 집으로 돌아가는 것은 쉽지 않은 결정이었다.

그럼에도 몬테시노 신부의 따뜻한 지도 덕분에 알베리오네는 1900년 10월, 열여섯 살에 이탈리아 쿠네오 주에 있는 알바 교구 신학교에 다시 들어갈 수 있었다. 알베리오네는 1900년 12월 31일부터 1901년 1월 1일까지, 두 세기 사이의 밤에 체험한 ‘빛’을 맛보며 간절히 기도했다. 이 일기는, 프란치스코 키에사 신부(1874-1946)의 영적 지도 아래 1907년 6월 29일 사제 서품을 받기 전, 철학과 신학을 공부하던 시기인 1901년에 맞이한 전환점에서 시작된다. 알베리오네는 알바 신학교에 입학했지만 수습 기간이었기에 곧바로 수단을 입을 수 없었고, 1902년 12월 8일 열여덟 살이 되어서야 비로소 수단을 받을 수 있었다.

영감을 주는 생각들이 담긴 알베리오네의 일기는 하느님과 자신, 그리고 이웃을 사랑하는 길을 보여준다. 이탈리아어로 "Sono Creato per Amare Dio"라는 제목의 이 일기는 "나는 하느님을 사랑하기 위해 창조되었다"라는 뜻이다. 알베리오네의 전집(오페라 옴니아) 가운데 편집되지 않은 네 번째 시리즈인 이 책은 다섯 부분, 곧 일기, 고별사(동료 신학생 아우구스티노 보렐로를 기리며 쓴 글), 들어 높임(묵상의 개요와 교훈적인 예화 모음), 성 아우구스티누스의 고백록 요약, 성경으로 구성되어 있다.

이 작은 일기에서 우리는 신학교 양성 시절에 알베리오네가 겪어낸 젊은 열정의 순간들을 느낄 수 있다. 다시 시작하려는 굳은 결심, 그가 지닌 사고의 점진적 성장, 정화와 변화를 향한 영적 여정, 전인적 인격 형성을 위해 힘과 의지력을 다한 그의 노력은 참으로 감동적이다. 자제력과 인내심과 같은 영적인 덕을 쌓고, 자신의 성향과 열정적인 상상력을 바로잡고, 자기 삶을 온전히 하느님 사랑을 향해 방향 지으려 한 그의 꾸준한 내적 작업은 성령의 영감을 받아 시나브로 대리석을 조각하는 것과 같다.

“Love, love, who said it is thicker than the fragrant flowers?” flows one of the folk songs on love. Love gives the deep fragrance and various colors to life. It’s more than the rainbow arising in the lofty sky after the rain.

Love is the Alpha and the Omega, that is, the beginning and the end, the cause and the effect, the reason and the answer. Love is the inner power that lets us live harmoniously with “one heart and one will” (Acts 4,32). Love is the fundamental principle of building the community and sustaining it with compassionate fraternity.

Our lives are filled with love. Truly, love is everything. From love come various virtues such as humility, generosity, sharing, compassion, patience, forgiveness, mildness, willing service, and more. The key point of the whole Bible is also love. The Bible keeps saying the priority of loving God and of loving your neighbors.

Lots of folk songs, poems, novels, arts, pictures and sculptures share love stories. Love is such a good thing.

“Give the truth with love!” is the motto of the Pauline mission renewed in Christ. Especially when we read the life of those who are converted, it is clear to notice that the starting point of conversion comes from the recognition of God’s unconditional love for us. From this awareness of spiritual love begins with a new life.

When I read the diary of Fr. James Alberione (1884-1971), the founder of the Pauline family, I was so touched with his struggle to begin anew that I began to translate it.

Alberione wanted to become a priest when he was 6 years old and entered a seminary at Bra, Torino, at the age of 12, but for some reason, he had to go back home after 4 years at the seminary. In fact, he read too many books even at night in the seminary and lost his sense of balance in the spiritual life. So he had to stop his studying to be a priest. Going back home in the middle of the seminary life was not an easy decision to cope with.

Nevertheless, thanks to the kind guidance of the Fr. Montersino, he could enter another diocesan seminary of Alba (Cuneo) in Italy at the age of 16 in October 1900. He prayed so hard in the night of light between the two centuries from December 31, 1900, to January 1, 1901. The diary begins with that turning point in 1901 during the period of studying philosophy and theology prior to the priestly ordination on June 29, 1907, under the guidance of Fr. Francis Chiesa (1874-1946) as a spiritual director. Even though he entered the seminary of Alba, he couldn’t wear the uniform immediately because he was under probation. Only on December 8, 1902, at the age of 18, was he able to receive his clerical investiture.

The diary, a collection of inspiring thoughts, shows one way to love God, the self, and others. It is entitled “Sono Creato per Amare Dio” in Italian, which means “I was created to love God.” This collection, the fourth in the series of the unedited writings of “Opera Omnia” by Alberione, consists of five parts: The Diary, Funeral eulogy, Elevations, a summary of Confessions of St. Augustine, and the Bible.
