In memory of Fr. Lee Hak-geun

Fr. Benedict Lee Hak-geun, the first priest born in Youngsan in Wonju, passed away at the age of 85 on March 28. He was ordained as a priest in 1965 with the ordination scriptures: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

When I first came to Wonju in the middle of last year, our Pauline community visited the secondary church called “Wolsong” which was founded in 1956. Wolsong secondary church is a small Catholic community in the village where Fr. Benedict had resided since 2008, two years after his retirement in 2006.

When he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination in 2015, he greeted people with a joyful and peaceful heart filled with gratitude.

In commemoration of his anniversary, he expressed his heartfelt impressions as follows: “Even though I am not good enough to do anything right, the Lord has called me to be a priest. I am always grateful for the grace of the Lord for allowing me to live as a priest until now.”

During his seminary life, he was so docile, caring and relaxed that his colleagues used to call him “Potato Rock.” The late Bishop Ji Hak-soon (1921-93), the first diocesan bishop of Wonju, once praised him, saying that “Fr. Benedict gave comfort to anyone and he didn’t make any hard expression.”

As usual, Fr. Benedict always welcomed us with a warm-hearted smile and kindness. Being our confessor before, he kept saying “to be joyful” above anything else; “Being joyful” and “being grateful” were his lifelong slogans.

He was transferred to the Wolsong community after the first falling down. When he fell the second time during Mass, he wished to go to the heavens, but advanced technology saved his life with an artificial pacemaker.

When our television in the community was not functioning well, he even bought a new one for us. When we visited him for a special day, he liked to have lunch all together with those who came to Mass. One day, he himself made a sandwich filled with lettuce for us. He was such a friendly, kind and simple priest.

Fr. Benedict was so friendly, generous, humble and open-minded that he was fond of making acquaintances with many people around. Being simple and joyful like a neighborhood person, he really enjoyed being with others. Accompaniment, generous hospitality and mingling together with people are the very phrases that can describe his personality.

As time went by, we could also feel that he was losing his power little by little. However, in spite of his health condition, he liked to drive by himself to visit the Pauline bookshop in the Catholic Center just in front of Wondong Cathedral founded in 1896.

He was a happy and cheerful person who knew how to be with others, how to talk freely with others, how to spend time with others, how to help others, how to give himself and how to enjoy his life.

Respecting Fr. Thomas Choi Yang-up the most, he always advised the junior priests to be “an errand man” of God. “Mass and the Sacraments are possible for the priests because the Lord leads us and because the Holy Spirit empowers us. Therefore, a priest must show God through his actions, reveal God’s warm heartedness and learn to forgive and love.”

이학근 신부님을 기리며

원주 영산에서 태어난 원주의 첫 사제 이학근 베네딕토 신부님이 3월 28일 85세에 선종하셨다. 신부님은 “나는 길이요 진리요 생명이다”(요한 14,6)라는 서품 성구와 함께 1965년에 사제 서품을 받으셨다.

지난해 중순 무렵 내가 원주에 처음 왔을 때 우리 바오로딸 공동체는 1956년에 설립된 “월송” 공소를 방문했다. 월송 공소는 베네딕토 신부님이 2006년에 은퇴하신 지 2년 후인 2008년부터 상주하신 마을에 있는 작은 가톨릭 공동체다.

2015년, 사제서품 50주년을 기념할 무렵 신부님은 감사로 흘러 넘치는 기쁘고 평화로운 마음으로 사람들을 맞이하셨다.

신부님은 서품 기념일을 맞아 “부족해 제대로 하는 것이 없는 저를 주님께서 사제로 불러주셨습니다. 지금까지 사제로 살게 해 주신 주님의 은총에 늘 감사드립니다” 하며 진심 어린 소감을 말씀하셨다.

신학교 생활 동안 신부님은 유순하고 자상하고 느긋하여 동료들은 그를 "감자 바위"라고 부르곤 했다. 원주의 초대 교구장이셨던 故 지학순 주교님(1921-1993)은, “베네딕토 신부님은 누구에게나 편안함을 주었고 힘든 내색을 하지 않았다”고 칭찬하신 적이 있다.

베네딕토 신부님은 한결같이 따뜻한 미소와 친절한 마음으로 늘 우리를 환대하셨다. 예전에 우리 바오로딸들의 고해 사제이셨을 때 신부님은 무엇보다 “기뻐하라”고 거듭 말씀하셨다. “기뻐하고 감사하라”는 말씀은 신부님이 평생에 걸쳐 살아낸 슬로건이었다.

신부님은 첫 번째로 쓰러진 후 월송 공동체로 옮겨가셨다. 미사 가운데 두 번째로 쓰러지셨을 때 신부님은 하늘나라로 가길 바라셨지만 첨단 기술 덕분에 인공심장박동기로 목숨을 구하셨다.

우리 공동체의 텔레비전이 잘 나오지 않았을 때 신부님은 우리에게 새 텔레비전을 사주시기도 했다. 우리가 특별한 날에 신부님을 방문했을 때 신부님은 미사에 참례한 분들과 함께 점심 먹는 것을 좋아하셨다. 어느 날 신부님은 우리를 위해 양상추를 가득 넣은 샌드위치를 직접 만들어주셨다. 신부님은 이처럼 온화하고 친절하며 단순한 사제이셨다.

베네딕토 신부님은 매우 친절하고 관대하고 겸손하며 개방적이어서 주변의 많은 사람들과 친하게 지내는 것을 좋아하셨다. 동네 사람처럼 소박하고 쾌활하여 다른 사람들과 함께 있는 것을 참으로 즐거워하셨다. 동반, 아낌없는 환대, 사람들과 함께 어울림은 신부님의 성품을 잘 드러내는 표현들이다.

그런데 시간이 지날수록 점점 힘을 잃어가시는 것을 우리 또한 느낄 수 있었다. 이러한 건강 상태에도 신부님은 혼자 운전하여 1896년에 설립된 원동성당 맞은편에 있는 가톨릭 센터 내 바오로딸 서원을 즐겨 방문하셨다.

신부님은 다른 사람들과 어울리고 자유롭게 이야기하며 시간을 보내는 법, 사람들을 돕고 자신을 내어주며 인생을 즐기는 법을 아는 행복하고 쾌활한 분이셨다.
 
최양업 토마스 신부를 가장 존경한 신부님은 후배 사제들에게 하느님의 “심부름꾼”이 되라고 늘 당부하셨다. “주님께서 우리를 이끄시고 성령께서 우리에게 힘을 주시기에 미사와 성사가 가능하다. 그러므로 사제는 행동으로 하느님을 보여주고 하느님의 따뜻한 마음을 드러내야 하며, 용서하며 사랑하는 법을 배워야 한다.”
