‘Moment of healing’

Truly from the eyes of God, a humble and simple person can be transformed into a marvelous person. Looking at one’s appearance only, some people might say that “you are not talented” at all, but a miserable situation can be a ladder to spiritual improvement.

Such is the case of Fr. V. Anthony Saji, who was born in India in 1977. He had dreamed of becoming a priest since childhood. However, he was not accepted into the religious congregation immediately because he wasn't able to talk freely in public.

When he was finally accepted into the Vincentian Congregation, he had to work in the pigpen. In spite of this situation, he completed his seminary courses in India and Kenya, East Africa, and was ordained a priest on Dec. 29, 2006 in Kerala, India.

He was not sure about preaching in public, but the Holy Spirit gave him a miracle. In the end, by the grace of God, he was appointed to go around the world to hold the “Six Days Silent Healing Retreat with Mary Our Mother,” in the footsteps of the late Fr. Joseph K. Bill (1928-2008). At present, Fr. Anthony Saji devotes himself to celebrating a “Healing Mass” and to holding the “Popular Mission Retreat,” so as to help people to open up to the spirit of God.

Fr. Joseph K. Bill was born on Feb. 23, 1928, and was ordained a priest in 1958. He was a devoted and gifted priest of the Vincentian Congregation. At the age of 48, he suffered two heart attacks. Therefore, his doctor warned him not to undertake any strenuous physical activity. He had to take medication regularly to control and stabilize his condition.

One day, he participated in a retreat organized by the Charismatic movement. At the end of the retreat, a bishop invited him to be prayed over and asked him to tell him his wish. Then, he saw Jesus touch him, and a major transformation occurred in him. Through him, God healed many people.

After healing, he studied “Faith Healing” and traveled to Pittsburg, the U.S., for this particular training. His first healing miracle occurred in a Boston church, when he prayed over a paralyzed person in a wheelchair to get them to walk.

In memory of Fr. Joseph K. Bill, Fr. Anthony Saji walks the same spiritual path of healing for the goodness of people. When Fr. Anthony first preached in public, some people complained that he was so young. Among those who enrolled in the healing program, they went back home without listening to his talks.

Nevertheless, Fr. Anthony Saji follows the Holy Spirit and gives talks centering on the words of God in the Bible. Every year, he also visits Korea to meet those who want to participate in the Healing Retreat.

Marvelous works are going on through those who experience the grace of God. Truly, the baby Jesus comes every moment to those who seek the truth and put “love” into practice.

“Moment of Healing,” written by Father V. Anthony Saji has recently been published by the Daughters of Saint Paul in Seoul. It is a collection of homilies from the “Six Days Silent Healing Retreat,” and comes out after “The Very Special Moment: The Healing Retreat with Father Anthony,” which was published in 2013.

치유의 순간

참으로 하느님의 눈길로 보면 겸손하고 단순한 사람이 놀라운 사람으로 변화될 수 있다. 어떤 사람의 겉모습만 보고 “당신은 재능이 전혀 없어” 하고 말할 수 있겠지만, 그처럼 처절한 상황은 오히려 영적 성장에 이르는 사다리가 될 수 있다.

1977년 인도에서 태어난 V. 안토니오 사지 신부의 경우가 그렇다. 그는 어렸을 때부터 사제가 되는 것이 꿈이었지만 사람들 앞에서 자유롭게 말할 수 없었기에 곧바로 수도회에 받아들여지지 않았다.

마침내 빈첸시오회가 그를 받아들였을 때 그는 돼지 우리에서 일해야 했다. 이러한 상황 속에서도 그는 인도와 동아프리카 케냐에서 신학 과정을 수료했고, 2006년 12월 29일 인도 케랄라에서 사제로 서품되었다.

그는 대중 앞에서 설교하는 것에 자신이 없었지만 성령께서 그에게 기적을 일으키셨다. 하느님의 은총으로 그는 작고하신 요셉 K. 빌 신부님(1928-2008)의 뒤를 따라 세계를 돌아다니며 “성모님과 함께하는 6일간의 침묵 치유피정”을 지도하는 후임자로 임명되었다. 안토니오 사지 신부는 사람들이 하느님의 영에 마음을 열도록 돕기 위해 “치유 미사”를 거행하며 “침묵 치유피정”을 지도하는 일에 전념하고 있다.

요셉 K. 빌 신부는 1928년 2월 23일에 태어나 1958년 사제로 서품되었다. 그는 헌신적이고 재능 있는 빈첸시오회 수도사제였지만 48세의 나이에 두 차례나 심장마비를 겪었다. 그리하여 그의 주치의는 그에게 격렬한 신체 활동을 하지 말라고 권고했다. 그는 자기 상태를 조절하며 안정시키기 위해 정기적으로 약을 복용해야 했다.

어느 날 그는 성령운동 단체가 조직한 피정에 참여했다. 피정이 끝날 무렵, 한 주교가 그에게 안수 기도를 하며 바라는 것이 무엇인지 말하라고 했다. 그러자 그는 예수님이 자신을 어루만지는 것을 보았고, 그에게 놀라운 변화가 일어났다. 그를 통해 하느님은 많은 사람을 치유하셨다.

치유를 받은 그는 “신앙 치유”에 대해 공부했고, 이처럼 특별한 훈련을 하기 위해 미국 피츠버그로 떠났다. 그가 일으킨 첫 번째 치유 기적은 보스턴 성당에서 일어났다. 그가 휠체어에 앉아 있던 중풍병자가 걷게 해달라고 기도했을 때였다.

안토니오 사지 신부는 요셉 K. 빌 신부를 기억하며 사람들의 선을 위해 그 신부가 했던 것과 같은 영적 치유의 길을 걸어가고 있다. 안토니오 신부가 처음으로 대중 설교를 했을 때 몇몇 사람은 그가 너무 어리다고 불평했다. 침묵 치유피정에 등록한 사람들 가운데는 그의 강론을 듣지도 않고 집으로 되돌아간 이들도 있다.

그럼에도 안토니오 사지 신부는 성령을 따라 성경에 있는 하느님 말씀을 바탕으로 설교한다. 해마다 그는 치유피정을 하고자 하는 사람들을 만나러 한국을 찾아온다.

하느님의 은총을 체험하는 사람들을 통해 놀라운 일이 끊임없이 일어난다. 참으로 아기 예수님은 진리를 추구하며 '사랑'을 실천하는 이들에게 순간순간 다가오신다.

V. 안토니오 사지 신부가 쓴 “치유의 순간”이 최근 서울 바오로딸에서 출간되었다. 이 책은 ”6일간의 침묵 치유피정”에서 한 강론 모음으로, 2013년에 발행된 “아주 특별한 순간: 안토니오 신부와 함께하는 침묵 치유피정”에 이은 것이다.
