Gospel of Life prayer breakfast 

I had an opportunity to attend the 15th Annual Archbishop's Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast held on Wednesday, in the ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, Missouri. 

Hosted by the St. Louis Chapter of Legatus, an international organization of dedicated lay people, including CEOs, presidents, managing partners and business owners who devote themselves to studying, living and spreading the Catholic faith in their business, professional and personal lives. They try to become better Catholics who can impact their businesses and lives. 

To celebrate this annual meeting, Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast sponsors invited several groups of high school students from Catholic schools as well as various religious sisters and brothers. 

Interestingly, the breakfast prayer program took place from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m., with praying the Rosary on the theme of pro-life issues. To meet with this early schedule, I had to get up at 4:40 a.m. 

Then, the Holy Mass was presided over by the Most Reverend Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski. Breakfast followed only after praying the Rosary and saying Mass. After sharing a beautiful meal with a cup of coffee, Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, representing parts of Jefferson County in the Missouri Senate, gave her keynote address on pro-life issues while advocating for the culture of life, religious liberty and family values. 

Childbirth, including birth control and abortion, is a very sensitive issue around the world. France became the first country to enshrine abortion rights in the constitution in March 2023. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, "We are sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you." With the slogan of "my body my choice," France now protects abortion as a "guaranteed freedom." 

In the United States, on the other hand, the abortion issue is one of the most divisive arguments. Among the country's states, 14 ban abortions in almost all circumstances, 17 have gestational limits on abortions, and 19 States allow abortions. 

Abortions are being performed both in public and in secret in Korea, where the birthrate is the lowest in the world. It is a pity to see that the number of children is decreasing more and more at a noticeable rate nowadays. We can see the prayer corners for aborted babies either in churches or at pilgrimage sites. 

Much prayer and attention are needed to protect human rights. Probably thanks to people's faithful prayers and conscious practices, more children are visible in the Catholic congregations in Missouri. It is so beautiful and encouraging to see children sitting near their parents during Mass. In terms of the presence of children and young people in the churches, I can see much hope in the United States. 

The term Gospel of Life came from "Evangelium Vitae," an encyclical proclaimed in 1995 on the value and inviolability of human life by Pope John Paul II. The Gospel of life toward a fullness of life is given to each of us "as a good to be shared with all people." 

The encyclical reads, "The Gospel of Life is for the whole of human society. To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good."

생명의 복음 조찬 기도 모임  

지난 수요일 미주리 주 세인트루이스 리츠칼튼 호텔 연회장에서 열린 제15차 생명의 복음 조찬 기도 모임에 참석할 기회가 있었다. 

세인트루이스 레가투스가 기도 모임을 주최했는데, 레가투스는 사업터와 전문직, 개인의 삶에서 가톨릭 신앙을 익히고 실천하며 전하는 데 마음을 쓰는 기업 경영인, 사장, 경영 파트너, 사업주를 포함한 헌신적인 평신도로 구성된 국제 조직으로, 각 회원이 이끄는 사업과 개인 삶을 향상시키는 신앙인이 되려고 노력한다. 

이번 연례 모임 행사를 위해 생명의 복음 조찬 기도 모임 후원자들은 가톨릭 학교에 다니는 여러 학생과 수도자들을 초대했다. 

흥미롭게도 조찬 기도 모임은 아침 6시에 생명 보호를 위한 묵주기도로 시작하여 9시까지 지속되었다. 이처럼 이른 일정에 맞추기 위해 나는 새벽 4시 40분에 일어나야 했다. 

묵주기도 후, 미첼 T. 로잔스키 대주교님이 미사를 집전했고, 곧바로 아침 식사가 이어졌다. 커피와 함께 멋진 식사를 한 다음 미주리 주 상원 제퍼슨 카운티를 대표하는 상원의원 메리 엘리자베스 콜먼이 생명 문화, 종교의 자유, 가족의 가치를 옹호하는 맥락에서 생명 보호 문제에 대한 기조 연설을 했다. 

피임과 낙태를 포함한 출산 문제는 세계적으로 매우 민감한 주제다. 2023년 3월 프랑스는 처음으로 헌법에 낙태 권리를 명시한 나라가 되었다. 가브리엘 아탈 총리는 모든 여성에게 “여성의 몸은 여성 자신의 것”이라는 메시지를 보냈다. 프랑스는 이제 “내 몸은 내 선택”이라는 슬로건을 내세우며 낙태를 자유롭게 보장하고 있다. 

한편 미국에서는 낙태가 큰 분열을 불러일으키는 논쟁 가운데 하나다. 미국의 모든 주 가운데 14개 주가 거의 모든 상황에서 낙태를 금지하고 있고, 17개 주에서는 낙태와 관련하여 임신 기간에 제한을 두며, 19개 주에서는 낙태를 허용하고 있다. 

출산율이 세계에서 가장 낮은 한국에서는 알게 모르게 낙태를 시행하고 있다. 요즘 눈에 띄게 아이들이 점점 줄어들고 있어 참으로 안타까운 상황이다. 성당이나 순례지 곳곳에서 낙태아를 위해 기도하는 코너를 엿볼 수 있다. 

인권 보호를 위해서는 많은 기도와 관심이 필요하다. 사람들의 충실한 기도와 의식하며 실천하려는 노력 덕분에 미주리 주 가톨릭 성당에는 아이들이 여전히 많이 나온다. 미사 때 아이들이 부모님 곁에 함께 앉아 있는 모습은 참 아름답고 고무적이다. 성당에 나오는 어린이와 젊은이들을 보면 미국에 많은 희망이 있음을 느낀다. 

“생명의 복음”이라는 말은 1995년 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 인간 생명의 가치와 불가침성에 대해 선포한 회칙 “Evangelium Vitae”에 나온다. 충만한 삶을 향한 생명의 복음은 “모든 사람들과 나누어야 할 선”으로 우리 한 사람 한 사람에게 주어졌다. 

회칙은 말한다. "생명의 복음은 인간 사회 전체를 위한 것입니다. 능동적으로 생명을 옹호한다는 것은 공동선의 증진을 통한 사회의 쇄신에 기여하는 것입니다."
