Fundraising dinner for Ukraine 

Once retired from the front line, some people don’t want to be involved in social or communitarian activities anymore, but many still hope to be as active and lively as possible. 

One good example is Rev. Johnson, 84. As a retired priest, he likes to join several activities such as book club and spiritual direction. He enjoys meeting people and talking with them. 

Relying on a one-legged walker, he comes to Pauline Books & Media Center several times a week. Especially on Fridays and Saturdays, he is happy to join the morning prayer together with us and to celebrate Mass for us in our chapel. 

Despite getting old, he is cheerful and lively, as if filled with the Holy Spirit. He smiles often and appreciates our smiles. 

On Saturday, he has breakfast with us. One day in April, he invited us to join a fundraising dinner buffet of authentic Ukrainian food, dessert and drinks at St. Justin Martyr Parish Center. 

St. Justin Martyr Parish and St. Catherine Laboure Parish co-hosted a fundraising dinner for Ukrainian refugees in St. Louis in the U.S. state of Missouri. In appreciation of our friendship, Rev. Johnson bought one round table for us to support Ukrainian immigrants. 

According to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, millions of people are displaced by the Ukrainian war. At present, more than 6 million refugees and asylum-seekers are spread across the European region. 

What Ukrainians hope would be moments of healing, resilience and the freedom from post-totalitarian trauma and tension. Considering such a complicated political confrontation, “Ukraine Diary,” written by Henri J.M. Nouwen (1932-96) was published in 2023. 

Nouwen wrote this diary while making two trips to Ukraine to lead retreats in 1993 with the invitation of Borys Gudziak, now Metropolitan Archbishop of Philadelphia, and in 1994 at the invitation of Zenia Kushpeta. 

Encountering the circumstances of Ukraine at that time, which is still relevant these days, Nouwen wrote as follows: 

“Not only were there many poor people in Ukraine, but Ukraine as a nation was poor, poorly situated in Europe, poorly treated by East and West, poorly held together by conflicting political interests. … God loves the poor. God even has a preferential love for the poor. Ukraine is poor, very poor, not just materially, but also emotionally and spiritually. To care for the poor means much more than reaching out to people who need food, jobs, clothes, and a safe place to stay. It means also to care for nations that are crushed by the forces of history and live under the burden of being ignored and rejected by the international community. Personally, I felt a deep desire to stay faithful to the Ukrainian people and to keep choosing not just for the individual poor, who need support, but also for the country that is so clearly marginalized in the family of nations.” 

God’s Providence always flows downward and thus becomes incarnational. God comes down to us in our very place of weakness, poverty, nothingness, brokenness, failure, contradiction and desperation. 

Nouwen concludes his Ukraine Diary with faithful hope: “Blessed are the poor. … The true blessing comes from the poor. After this trip to Ukraine, I know in a new way that the people we have met there challenge us to be faithful to our commitment to the poor and to trust that through that faithfulness we will find true joy and peace.”

우크라이나를 위한 모금 만찬  

일선에서 활동하다 은퇴한 다음 어떤 사람들은 사회나 공동체 활동에 더는 가담하지 않으려 하지만 여전히 많은 사람이 가능한 한 적극적으로 활발하게 움직이기를 바란다. 

은퇴한 다음에도 활동적인 좋은 본보기 가운데 한 분은 올해 84세이신 존슨 신부님이다. 은퇴한 사제로서 존슨 신부님은 독서 클럽과 영적 지도 같은 몇몇 활동에 즐겨 참여하며 사람들을 만나 이야기 나누는 것을 좋아하신다. 

존슨 신부님은 지팡이 보행기에 의지하여 일주일에 몇 차례 바오로딸 센터를 찾아오신다. 특히 금요일과 토요일 아침에는 바오로딸 채플을 방문하여 기꺼이 함께 기도한 다음 미사를 집전하신다. 

존슨 신부님은 연세가 들어도 성령이 흘러 넘치듯 유쾌하며 활기로 가득하다. 신부님은 거듭 웃음 지으며 우리 또한 웃음으로 답례하는 것을 고맙게 생각하신다. 

토요일에는 우리와 함께 아침을 드신다. 지난 4월 어느 날, 신부님은 성 유스티노 순교자 성당 홀에서 열린 우크라이나를 위한 모금 만찬에 우리를 초대하셨는데, 만찬에는 정통 우크라이나 음식과 디저트, 음료가 준비되어 있었다. 

성 유스티노 순교자 성당과 성 가타리나 라부레 성당은 미주리주 세인트루이스에 사는 우크라이나 난민들을 돕기 위한 모금 만찬을 공동 주최했다. 존슨 신부님은 평소 우리와 함께 나누는 우정에 감사하는 마음으로 우크라이나 이민자들을 후원하기 위해 둥그런 테이블에 모여 앉아 먹을 수 있는 티켓을 구입하여 우리를 초대하셨다. 

미국 이민자 및 난민 위원회에 따르면, 우크라이나 전쟁으로 인해 몇 백만 사람들이 난민이 되어 여기저기 흩어져 산다고 한다. 현재 유럽 전역에는 600만이 넘는 난민과 망명 신청자들이 산재해 있다. 

우크라이나인들이 바라는 것은 전체주의 이후의 트라우마와 긴장감에서 치유되고 회복력을 갖고 다시 일어나며 자유를 누리는 순간일 것이다. 이처럼 복잡한 정치적 대립을 염두에 둔 헨리 J.M. 나우웬(1932-1996)이 쓴 “우크라이나 일기”가 2023년에 출간되었다. 

나우웬은 현재 필라델피아 대주교인 보리스 구지악의 초대로 1993년에 한 차례, 그리고 1994년에는 제니아 쿠쉬페타의 초대로 피정을 지도하기 위해 우크라이나를 두 차례 방문하는 동안 일기를 썼다. 

오늘날에도 여전히 관련이 있는 당시 우크라이나의 상황에 직면한 나우웬은 다음과 같이 묘사했다. 

“우크라이나에는 가난한 사람들이 많았을 뿐 아니라 국가 자체로서 가난했다. 유럽 가운데 열악한 위치에 처했고, 동서양의 대우가 좋지 않았으며, 갈등을 불러일으킨 정치적 이해관계로 결속력이 약했다. … 하느님은 가난한 이들을 사랑하신다. 하느님은 가난한 이들을 우선적으로 사랑하신다. 우크라이나는 물질적으로만 아니라 정서적으로나 영적으로도 가난하고 무척 궁핍하다. 가난한 이들을 돌본다는 것은 음식과 일자리, 옷과 피난처를 필요로 하는 사람들에게 다가가는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 행위를 베푸는 것을 뜻한다. 역사의 세력에 의해 짓밟히고, 국제 공동체에서 무시되고 거부당하는 부담을 안고 살아가는 나라들을 보호하며 배려하는 것을 뜻하기도 한다. 개인적으로 나는 우크라이나 국민에게 충실하게 머물고자 하는 마음, 지원이 필요한 가난한 개인 한 사람 한 사람은 물론 여러 나라 가운데 드러나게 소외된 나라를 위해 끊임없이 마음 쓰려고 선택하고자 하는 깊은 갈망을 느꼈다.” 

하느님 섭리는 언제나 아래로 흐르며 육화된다. 하느님은 우리 자신의 연약함, 가난함, 아무것도 아님, 부서진 마음, 실패, 모순, 절망 속에 있는 우리를 찾아 내려오신다. 

한결같은 희망을 지녔던 나우웬은 다음과 같이 우크라이나 일기를 마무리한다. “가난한 사람은 행복하다. … 참된 축복은 가난한 이들에게서 온다. 이번 우크라이나 여행 이후 내가 그곳에서 만난 사람들을 통해 새롭게 깨달은 것은 우리가 가난한 이들에게 한결같이 헌신할 것을, 그 충실한 헌신을 통해 비로소 참 기쁨과 평화를 얻게 되리라는 것을 믿으라고 우리에게 도전하고 있다는 것이다.”
