Each of us has dreams. Dreams motivate and inspire us to pursue our goals constantly with hope and perseverance. Dreams let us go beyond limits. So, we go on our journey day in and day out. 

One of the good examples of living faithfully with dreams would be Sister Gemma who has many dreams. One of her dreams was to publish a collection of faith stories written by various immigrants. 

Dedicating her life to the spiritual welfare of immigrants, she has met many immigrants while doing her mission with book exhibits and book clubs. Encountering various people and listening to their touching stories, she prayed for each of them most sincerely. One day, she felt that she was inspired by the Blessed Mother Mary to make a book out of their stories. 

So, she began to collect stories from people and edited them with the help of a volunteer editor. In the end, God listened to her faithful prayer, and she recently published a book, titled “Dreams and Journeys: Stories of Korean Immigrants in North America.” 

A total of 60 contributors are living at present from Montreal at the eastern tip of Canada to San Diego at the southern tip of the western United States, and from Vancouver in southwestern Canada to Miami at the southeastern tip of the United States. Symbolically, the book covers all sides of North America. 

As a collection of 60 articles of immigrants who have experienced God’s love and mercy while undergoing their spiritual journeys in various fields, “Dreams and Journeys” shares their adventurous dreams, courageous challenges, heartbreaking failure and frustration, beautiful reconciliation and forgiveness, inspiring hope and gratitude. 

Colomba living in Denver, CO., shares her life of faith that grew through marathons: “My life changed little by little. I began to accept everything as it is and think positively about everything. I began to exercise early in the morning and go to bed early at night, and my old insomnia disappeared. After that, I ran several marathons…” 

Archbishop Thomas Wenski in the Archdiocese of Miami says in his introductory letter to this book: 

“Immigration is a drama that each of us has participated in one way or another, for immigration is a lived reality for most Americans. Even those of us born in this country can find stories in our own families of parents, grandparents or great-grandparents leaving the ‘old country’ for the promise of America." 

He also said, "A tree, even if transplanted to new soil, can grow, and produce rich fruits if its roots are protected and tended to. Like skin protects the body from disease and injury, culture protects people. So too, the various national groups and ethnicities can grow and prosper in the ‘new soil’ of America if, even while adapting to the conditions of the new country, they preserve and protect their cultural roots.” 

Sr. Gemma believes that an immigrant's life is “a life woven together with God.” So, she hopes this book would provide “a story for someone to return to the Lord who gives strength, hope, courage, blessings and life.” 

Surely as a touching and inspiring guide for everybody, especially those preparing for immigrant life, “Dreams and Journeys” will give strength, courage and hope to those who appreciate each story, whether believer or non-believer. 

“Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Your every act should be done with love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

우리는 저마다 꿈을 지니고 산다. 꿈은 우리에게 동기를 부여하고 영감을 주어 한결같이 희망을 품고 끈기있게 목표를 추구하게 한다. 꿈은 우리 자신의 한계를 넘어서게 하여 우리는 날마다 삶의 여정을 걸어간다. 

꿈을 품고 충실하게 살아가는 좋은 예 가운데 하나는 많은 꿈을 지닌 젬마 수녀다. 수녀님의 꿈 가운데 하나는 다양한 이민자들의 신앙 체험기를 모아 책을 펴내는 것이었다. 

이주민들의 영적 행복을 위해 헌신한 수녀님은 도서 보급과 북 클럽 모임으로 선교 사명을 수행하면서 많은 이주민들을 만났다. 여러 이주민들이 나누어준 감동적인 이야기를 귀담아들은 수녀님은 그들 한 사람 한 사람을 위해 진심으로 기도했다. 그러던 어느 날, 수녀님은 성모님께서 이주민들의 이야기를 담은 책을 만들라고 영감을 주신다고 느꼈다. 

그리하여 젬마 수녀님은 이주민들의 체험담을 모으기 시작했고 마침내 자원봉사자의 도움을 받아 책을 편집했다. 마침내 하느님께서 충실한 수녀님의 기도를 들으시어 "꿈과 여정: 북미주 한인 이민자들의 체험기"라는 책이 최근 출간되었다. 

이 책에 글을 낸 60명의 기고자들은 현재 캐나다 동부 끝자락에 있는 몬트리올에서 미국 서쪽 끝에 있는 샌디에고까지, 캐나다 서북부에 있는 밴쿠버에서 미국 동남부 끝인 마이애미에 이르기까지 살고 있다. 이 책은 상징적으로 북미주의 모든 지역을 망라한다. 

다양한 삶의 터전에서 영적 여정을 거치며 하느님의 사랑과 자비를 체험한 이민자들이 쓴 60편의 글을 담은 "꿈과 여정"은 모험 가득한 꿈, 용감한 도전, 가슴 아픈 실패와 좌절, 아름다운 화해와 용서, 영감을 주는 희망, 감사하는 마음을 나눈다. 

콜로라도주 덴버에 사는 골롬바는 마라톤을 통해 성장한 자신의 신앙 생활을 다음과 같이 나눈다. "서서히 내 생활에도 변화가 왔다. 모든 것을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 매사를 긍정적으로 생각하는 마음이 생기고 아침 일찍 운동을 시작하고 저녁에 일찍 잠자리 들게 되어 오래된 불면증도 없어졌다. 그 후에도 나는 여러 마라톤 대회에서 뛰었다…” 

마이애미 대교구의 토마스 웬스키 대주교는 이 책에 보낸 인사말에서 이렇게 말한다. 

“이민은 우리 각자가 어떤 식으로든 참여해 온 드라마입니다. 이민은 대부분의 미국인들에게 생생한 현실이기 때문입니다. 이 나라에서 태어난 우리들조차도 미국의 약속을 위해 ‘옛 나라’를 떠나는 부모, 조부모, 증조부모의 가족에게서 그 이야기를 찾을 수 있습니다.” 

“나무는 새 땅에 옮겨 심더라도 뿌리를 잘 보호하고 가꾸면 잘 자랄 수 있고 풍성한 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다. 피부가 질병과 부상으로부터 신체를 보호하는 것처럼 문화는 사람을 보호합니다. 마찬가지로 한인 가족들도 새로운 나라의 상황에 적응하면서도 자신들의 문화적 뿌리를 보존하고 보호한다면 미국의 ‘새 땅’에서 성장하고 번영할 수 있습니다.” 

젬마 수녀님은 이민 생활이 “하느님과 함께 엮어가는 삶”이라고 믿기에 이 책이 "다른 누군가에게 이야기가 되어 주님께로 다시 나아가게 하는 힘, 희망과 용기를 주고, 축복과 생명을 가져다주는 계기”가 되길 바란다. 

"꿈과 여정"은 모든 사람, 특히 이민 생활을 준비하는 사람들에게 감동과 영감을 주는 길잡이로 신자든 비신자든 이야기에 맛들이는 이들에게 힘과 용기, 희망을 줄 것이다. 

“깨어 있으십시오. 믿음 안에 굳게 서 있으십시오. 용기를 내십시오. 힘을 내십시오. 여러분이 하는 모든 일이 사랑으로 이루어지게 하십시오.”(1코린 16,13-14)
