최대한 활용하기 Making the most of it!

예전 심리학자들과 영성가들은 내적 작업을 하려면 무엇보다 우리 자신의 단점(부족함)과 상처(아픔)를 잘 살펴보아야 한다고 말했다. 하지만 요즘의 긍정 심리학은 단점과 상처를 자세히 살펴보는 것보다 우리가 지닌 장점과 여러 가능성에 더 많은 비중을 둔다.

모두 옳은 소리라고 생각하지만, 성령께서 주시는 잠재적 가능성과 영적 희망에 집중하는 것을 나는 선호한다. 우리 안에 내재된 생명력을 나는 믿는다. 태양이 드높이 떠오를수록 그림자는 조금씩 사라지기 때문이다.

우리 공동체에 빔 프로젝터가 하나 있는데 최근 들어 아무도 사용하지 않았다. 프로젝터는 마치 골동품처럼 방 한구석에 아무런 소리도 없이 가만히 놓여 있었다.

＂희망의 순례자로서 유혹을 극복하는 여섯 가지 방법＂이라는 주제로 신자들을 위한 사순 피정을 준비하면서 나는 공동체에 있는 프로젝터의 특성을 온전히 이해하지 못한 채 장에서 꺼내 사용하려고 했다. 얼핏 보기에 괜찮았다.

그러던 어느 날 작은 성당에 피정 선교를 갔는데 제대 위에 놓인 스크린이 우리가 설치한 빔 프로젝터에서 너무 멀리 떨어져 있었다. PPT에 담긴 글이 화면에 보이긴 했지만 초점이 맞지 않아 약간 흐릿했는데 프로젝터의 초점 설정을 움직일 수 없었다.

예기치 못한 상황으로 사과드려야 했는데 한 시간 삼십분이 금세 지나가 버렸다. 지인들의 기도 덕분에 시간이 참으로 빨리 지나갔다.

공동체에 돌아와 프로젝터의 한계와 세부사항을 확인했는데, 이 프로젝터는 원래 단초점 전용으로 만들어져 스크린이 3~4미터 이내에 놓여 있을 때 가장 잘 보인다는 것을 알았다. 게다가 이 제품은 오래 전에 단종된 중고품이었다.

프로젝터를 스크린 가까이 두었더니 글이 무척 선명하게 보였다. 작은 공동체나 회의실에 적합한 제품이었던 것이다.

선교하기 전에 제품의 특성을 꼼꼼하고 사려 깊게 파악하지 못한 것이 아쉽지만 결정적 순간은 이미 지나가버렸다. 때는 너무 늦었다.

시행착오를 거쳤지만 좋은 경험이 되었다. 이젠 같은 실수를 반복하지 않을 것이다. 무언가를 하기 전에 제품이나 사람의 한계는 물론 장점과 특성까지도 알고 이해하며 파악하는 것은 정말 중요하다!

나는 종종 특정 사물이나 사람의 한계와 단점을 먼저 떠올리곤 한다. 하지만 좋은 면과 장점을 이해하고 살피며 인정하면 색다른 결실을 맺을 수 있다. 그럴 때 걱정과 우려가 해소되고 긴장과 스트레스까지 완화시킬 수 있다.

모든 것에는 덕스러움과 탁월함이 있다. 한 사람 한 사람의 장점과 미덕을 최대한 활용하는 것은 언제나 희망의 초석을 놓는다. 희망은 결코 우리를 실망시키지 않는다. 희망은 언제나 우리를 새롭게 하고 최대한 활용하도록 고무하며 영감을 준다.

하느님은 아브라함을 시험하여 외아들 이사악을 번제물로 바치게 하셨다. 사흘째 되는 날, 아브라함은 ＂멀리 있는 그곳을 볼 수 있었다.＂(창세 22,4) 아브라함은 시련과 유혹 앞에서 하느님의 시험을 통과했던 것이다.

In the past, psychologists and spiritualists used to say that we must first look into our shortcomings (flaws) and wounds (hurts) to do our inner work. These days, however, positive psychology gives more emphasis on our strengths and other possibilities rather than looking too closely at our shortcomings and wounds.

I think both sides are right, but I prefer to concentrate on the potential possibility and spiritual hope given by the Holy Spirit. I believe in the life force inherent within us because the shadows tend to get smaller and smaller when the sun shines brighter and brighter.

We have a beam projector in our community, but nobody has used it recently. It sat quietly, without a sound in a corner of the room, like an antique.

While preparing for the Lent retreat for parishioners of Catholic Churches on the themes of ＂Six Ways to Overcome Temptation as Pilgrims of Hope＂, I took the projector out of the wardrobe and tried to use it without fully understanding its characteristics. At first glance, it turned out to be good.

Then, I went out for the retreat mission in one of the little Catholic Churches. However, I realized the screen placed on top of the altar was too far from the beam projector. The words on the powerpoint presentations were visible on the screen, but they were a bit blurred since it was out of focus. I couldn’t fix the projector's focus settings by myself.

I had to apologize for the unexpected situation, but an hour and a half passed quickly. Time passed by so quickly with the help of prayers.

When I went back to the community, I checked the limits and product details of our projector and realized that it was originally made for single focus only, which means that the screen looks best if placed within 3 or 4 meters. Furthermore, this product was discontinued long ago, and the projector was already used.

At home, I placed the projector again at a short distance, and it was clear enough to see. It was supposed to be used for small communities or conference rooms.

I regret not being thorough and thoughtful enough to figure out its features before doing the mission, but the critical moments have passed by already. It was too late.

I went through trial and error, but it became a good experience so I know not to make the same mistake again. Before doing something, how important it is to know, understand and figure out not only the limitations but also the good points and characteristics of a product or a person!

I often think of the limitations and demerits of certain things or persons first, but understanding and looking at the good points and appreciating the merits can bring about different results. It can resolve worries and concerns, releasing much tension and stress.

Everything has its virtue and excellence. Making the most of each person’s strengths and virtues always lays the cornerstone of hope. Hope never discourages us. Hope always encourages and inspires us to renew every moment and to make the most of it.

God put Abraham to the test to offer his only son Isaac. Then, on the third day, Abraham ＂caught sight of the place from a distance.＂(Genesis 22:4) He faced the trials and temptations and went beyond the test.
